Coast Starlight, Zephyr and the Empire Builder

Ted, got back Thursday AM. Had a great trip and enjoyed it all the way. I thought I might make a few comments about it.

The Coast Starlight trip was fine, equipment was older but we had a nice parlor car to enjoy for the sleepers only. Also included a wine tasting with cheese and crackers. Very nice. The Sheraton in Sacramento was nice but I forgot to check on the comp. breakfast and no one at the hotel mentioned it so we paid for those. Food was good and we enjoyed. Zephyr was outstanding. New equipment, nice bedrooms, great staff. All black females and service was wonderful. As you suggested we tipped ahead and were treated like royalty. Even had one dinner served in our room as diner was crowed.

We enjoyed the Fairmont and the lounge very much. They originally sent us to an unmade room but quickly moved us to another. Later in the day a bellman delivered candies and comp. drink coupons compliments of the front desk for their error in room selection. An excellent hotel, we highly recommend it.

We boarded the Empire Builder after two nights in Chicago and started westward, Great train crew, service was excellent, room attendant was wonderful and took great care of us. Very solicitous. Our only problem was the roadbed on the northern route, we didn't get much sleep but enjoyed the scenery very much.

All in all it was a fun trip, the scenery beautiful. Fortunately, we were able to see a lot more of it due to the long days. Zephyr was 5 hours late but we had been told that it would be 3 hours late anyway due to roadbed work out of Reno. The Empire Builder was l hour early, but then we weren't in a hurry anyway.

Thanks for all you did, you made it a memorable trip. I'll let you know about trip for this fall. We should know shortly.

We just returned from trip to S. Calif. via air. It was a hassle. We decided that train travel is the way to go, even if it takes longer
